When it comes to 3D printing, there are many different websites that you can browse to find models to 3D print. Sorting through all the content makes it tough to find something that will “scratch the printing itch”. Sometimes, if you are lucky enough, the stars will align and the perfect model shines through the “dark rabbit hole” of STL files. This happened just recently. I was hunting for a printing project to submit, so I could take part in one of the many contests currently offered at Thangs, the Maker’s League contest. While digging through the “countless” pages of available models, What’s in David’s Mind by Make Anything caught my eye. What’s in David’s Mind is a statue of the head of Michelangelo’s David with a portion of it being a beautiful geode. As soon as I saw it, I knew exactly what filament would work for it and started plating and slicing.
Make Anything offers 3 different STLs for this print, both a combined model which requires painting and a separated model for easier printing. At first, I opted to print the 2 separate pieces using PrintBed Premium Cookies N’ Cream and CookieCad Witchcraft (PLA), only to find out that there was almost zero chance of being able to insert the geode into the head. Defeated, I decided to plate the combined model and began the arduous task of painting the geode. This took a decent amount of time. Once painted and sliced, my trusty Bambu Carbon X1C and AMS took another 34 hours to finish printing.
The model came out better than I could have imagined. The PrintBed Premium Cookies N’ Cream was the perfect filament for the statues exterior. The CookieCad Witchcraft filament mimics amethyst perfectly. Make Anything has a lot of fascinating models available with many of these being free for anyone with a Thangs account. Some of the premium content requires you to pay a monthly subscription for their Thangs membership. Click here to check out this entry for the current Maker’s League contest. I would really appreciate your vote!
