One of the great advancements in 3d printing is the ever-growing variety of filament types and colors. Unfortunately, I don’t have the budget to buy all these new fancy filaments. Paying $30-$50 to test a roll of filament just isn’t feasible for most of us. Luckily there are various 3D subscription services available to help us sample different types of filaments. Let’s talk about Alien3D.
I have been a proud supporter Alien3D since their 2nd shipment and have always been happy with their subscription box. I chose the Full UFO box. With the Full UFO box, you get (4) 20-meter filament samples, a mystery accessory, an electronics project, fun stickers, discount codes, and obligatory snack/candy. As a bonus, each month you are entered into a chance to win “The Mothership Box”. The Mothership Box will include a special prize that is not included with the normal subscriptions. When I was selected for the Mothership Box, I was sent a Mosquito Magnum Hotend valued at $175! I am still using that Mosquito Magnum in my Prusa Mk3s Full Bear. (I recommend both these upgrades to your Prusa Mk3s if you haven’t done them yet.)

Inside the August Full UFO box I received the following items:
Filament Samples
Polar Filament Merlot PLA
Polar Filament Blaze PLA
Polar Filament Fluorescent Blue PLA
Polar Filament Alien Green PLA
Snack
Kellogg’s Cinnabon Jumbo Snax
Mystery Accessory
An A830LMultimeter
Electronics Project
Ultrasonic Levitator
This month’s Mothership Box contained a 3D Chameleon. The 3D Chameleon allows you to add 4 color automatic filament changing to any 3D printer using 1.75 mm Filament. Retail price of $199!
Overall, this month’s subscription was a great value. The filaments were unique and will come in handy with a couple of prints I am planning out. The multimeter is going into my kid’s toolbox, since I already had one. My one gripe with this month’s box was the project itself. The Project isn’t designed for a beginner. If you aren’t that great at soldering, you may struggle with the tiny components that need to be soldered to the PCB. I have yet to build this project but look forward to the challenge!
